Coach Ian – Week In Review: 06/20/2021
Book I’m Reading
Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker
Sleep impacts everything. I used to think of sleep as some unnecessary part of my day. The prevailing notion was to be successful, you should get used to sleeping less and doing more. But sleeping more may help you to be more productive.
The book covers a bunch of interesting topics such as how sleep interacts with:
- Athletic recovery
- Productivity
- Aging
- Cancer
- Blood sugar control and appetite/weight gain
- Longevity
- Mental health
As a former boxer with a predisposition towards Alzheimer’s, I’m really interested in learning more about the glymphatic system and how the brain flushes itself of toxic plaques during deep sleep.
Don’t neglect your sleep!
Run Streak and Running Goals:
Progress: As of 6/20/21, I’ve now run 733 miles for the year, while maintaining my 171-day run streak.
Sparring vs Running:
When I tell people that I’m training for an ultramarathon, sometimes people ask if I ever get tired while sparring.
Yes, very.
They’re two entirely different systems at work. Most of my distance running is done with my heart rate below 152, although it goes higher while running hills. Sparring is done at a much higher intensity. I would compare sparring more to half mile repeats than marathons. With a much higher level of intensity and focus, because any mistake can lead to getting knocked out. And that’s the toughest part – staying sharp when working at that pace. Millisecond sharp.
They’re two entirely different kinds of toughness.
Boxing Highlights:
Naoya Inoue put on a clinic Saturday. What a body shot knockout.
