Coach Ian – Week in Review 03/21/2021:
Quote of the Week:
Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.
-Gautama Buddha
What I’m Listening To:
Dr Matt Cook (Bioreset Medical) is a functional health practicioner in Campbell, CA, not too far from where I live.
In this episode, Dr Matt Cook and Ben Greenfield answer 11 questions – inspired by the 11 questions Tim Ferriss gives in his book “Tools of the Titans”. Warning – these guys are biohackers, so some of the stuff they say they do with their bodies may seem farfetched if you’re not familiar with the space. Still an interesting listen.
Book I’m Reading
Article of the Week:
Conditioning for Boxing: I wrote about getting in shape for your first boxing match. Outside of your boxing training and sparring, how to structure your roadwork, incorporating tabata’s, half-mile sprints, Yasso 800’s, Heart Rate Zone training, hill repeats, distance running, and the Maffetone Method (for recovery) into your training.
Run Streak and Running Goals:
Since the start of the year, I’ve started off a Run Streak. I’ve run 5K/day every day, except for Saturday’s which are for my long distance runs.
Progress: As of 3/21/21, I’ve now run 327 miles for the year, while maintaining my 80-day run streak.
Boxing Matches This Week:
Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Maurice Hooker
Vergil Ortiz has all the tools to be great. His head movement, defense, power, and, most impressively to me, a great power jab. He started the fight off strong behind his power jab, which set everything up. In the third round, he strayed away from his jab and started loading up with power shots and Maurice Hooker was able to counter him. At that point, I wanted to see him go back to working his jab to set up his attack like he did in the first few rounds. Instead, he had success working the body and ultimately breaking Maurice Hooker down.
