Coach Ian – Week in Review 02/14/2021:
What I’m Listening To:
Last week, I mentioned that I would be trying out the Levels Health CGM (continuous glucose monitor) and app to track my blood sugar throughout the day. Recently, one of the co-founders of Levels, Josh Clemente, came on the Ben Greenfield podcast to discuss CGM best practices and how to interpret your data. Worth a listen!
Other companies getting into the CGM space:
Supersapiens, Nutrisense, and January are some other companies trying to make CGMs mainstream.
- Supersapiens is not available in the US yet. They were founded by Phil Southerland, a pro cyclist with type 1 diabetes. Dr. Jason Fung is listed as an advisor, and he is well known in this space as being the author of Obesity Code and Diabetes Code. I summarized a few points from Dr. Jason Fung’s book here.
- I see Nutrisense on social media more frequently than any of the others, and it appears they have a lower-cost offering than Levels Health. Dr Paul Saladino, best known for his research on the carnivore diet, is an advisor to Nutrisense. I summarized a few points from Dr. Paul Saladino’s book here.
- January AI is a silicon valley start-up that appears to have the most funding (~$20M in its seed round) and the team also has its ties to Stanford. January seems have invested more in the AI of their technology. They request that you wear a HR monitor, along with your CGM. Similar to Levels Health, they will have you try out a few challenges so they can provide insights on how to optimize your metabolic health. I don’t recognize any of the advisors, but they do seem to be quite experienced.
Run Streak and Running Goals:
Since the start of the year, I’ve started off a Run Streak. I’ve run 5K/day every day, except for Saturday’s which are for my long distance runs. While a lot is up in the air, my current timeline is as follows:
Weekly Goal:
- 25 miles/week
Monthly Goals:
- Overall mileage: 100 Miles in February
Races:
- Targeting a full-marathon in the second half of the year
Yearly Goal:
- 1,000 miles
Progress: As of 2/14/21, I’ve now run 178 miles for the year, while maintaining my 45-day run streak.
Boxing Matches This Week:
Adam “Blunose” Lopez vs Jason Sanchez
Adam Lopez came back from an early hole to pull out a decision against the tough Jason Sanchez – great fight! Adam does his strength and conditioning work with Marlon Fernando, who I interviewed here.
Joseph Diaz Jr vs Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov
At his best, Joseph Diaz is a very talented (and underrated prospect) who can hang with anyone. On Saturday, he lost his title on the scales and didn’t look great, particularly in the middle rounds when he walked in his high guard and didn’t counter punch. Rakhimov found a home with his sweeping left hand (as a southpaw) around Jojo Diaz’s guard and, while the punch wasn’t hurting Jojo, it did make the middle rounds convincing in Rakhimov’s favor. Diaz typically has great counter-punching skills and timing, but in those middle rounds he hardly made Rakhimov pay for any of his shots. Jojo finished strong, but at times he looked sloppy in winging his shots or getting his lead left hand out of place to catch return fire. More worrisome, to me, was his attitude in the post-fight interviews, where he seemed more concerned with the fact he thought he won than the fact he put out a very sub-par performance.
I could see the fight being a close Diaz decision or a draw in an underwhelming performance, since he’s certainly capable of more. I don’t know about all of the personal stuff Joseph had been going through, and he talked about gaining a lot of weight during the pandemic. Hopefully, he can get things back on track soon.
